Getting started
What does RegGate do? It enforces three kinds of regulated-product rules at checkout: state and province restrictions (block products that cannot ship somewhere), per-state quantity caps (limit how many units ship to a state), and a visible age confirmation. All three are held inside Shopify’s checkout.
Do I need a developer, a popup, or theme code changes? No. RegGate enforces through a Shopify checkout validation function. There is no storefront popup and nothing is added to your theme, so there is no page-speed cost and nothing to clean up later.
Is this legal advice, and does it guarantee compliance? No. RegGate enforces the rules you configure. It does not provide legal advice and cannot guarantee compliance with any law. You are responsible for knowing which restrictions, quantity limits, and age requirements apply to your products, and for keeping your rules current. For questions about your obligations, consult a qualified professional.
Restrictions and quantity caps
A shopper in a restricted state can still add the product to the cart. Does RegGate stop the order? Yes. The check runs at checkout against the shipping destination, so an order headed to a restricted state or province is blocked before it can be placed, even though the product was addable.
Can shoppers get around it by editing the cart or using a fast checkout? No. Because the rules are enforced by Shopify’s own checkout and not by a theme script, cart edits, pasted checkout links, and one-tap checkouts cannot bypass them.
How do per-state quantity caps work? You set a maximum number of units of a product that can ship to a given state. RegGate adds up the units in the order for that rule and blocks checkout to that state when the total is over the cap.
What if the shipping destination is not known yet? State restrictions and quantity caps apply once the destination state or province is known at checkout. An age confirmation requirement applies regardless of destination.
Age confirmation
How does the age confirmation work? The shopper sees a visible confirmation at checkout and must confirm before the order can be completed. RegGate requires that the confirmation is present. It is a check the shopper actually sees, not a hidden background lookup.
Does RegGate verify IDs or check a real age? No. RegGate records that the shopper confirmed the age requirement. It does not receive a birthdate, check an ID, or perform identity verification. For categories that legally require verified ID, RegGate is not a substitute for a dedicated ID-verification provider.
Where do I set the age (for example 18 or 21)? The age threshold lives in the confirmation text you show shoppers. RegGate enforces that the confirmation is made; the specific age you require is stated in your wording.
Setup and data
Why did checkout show that compliance settings are being updated? That is RegGate failing safe. If your rules are present but not yet readable (for example mid-update), RegGate holds checkout with a clear, temporary message rather than letting a restricted item through. It clears once the rules are readable again.
What data does RegGate use? Only what it needs to apply your rules: the shipping destination state or province, the cart contents, and the age-confirmation value at checkout. That check runs inside Shopify and is not sent to our servers. Your rule configuration is stored in Shopify. See the Privacy Policy for details.
What happens when I uninstall? The app stops accessing your store and its stored credentials are deleted. RegGate supports Shopify’s privacy webhooks for data and shop deletion.
